Description

Guaiacwood essential oil is extracted by steam distillation process from the broken wood and sawdust of the plants. Guaiacwood is an ornamental evergreen tree with pretty rich blue flowers and the trunk is greenish-brown in color. It is traditionally used for treating rheumatish and rheumatoid arthritis, gout and venereal disease.

History

The tree is also called Lignum vitae which means "tree of life". The tree contains rich supplies of fats and resins which make it hard and impervious to water. It was used for ornamental carving. It was medicinally used to treat syphilis and gout. Bulnesia Sarmientoi Lorentz EX are native of South America. Trees are small and slow-growing having dense crown. The leaves are compound, broadly oval and rounded at tip. Resin obtained from tree is used for flavouring cakes and chewing gum. It is also added to edible oils to prevent acidification. The resin has medicinal properties and can treat chronic rheumatism, skin diseases, scrofula, dysmenorrhea and toothache. The wood is hard, close-grained, tough, dense, and durable.

Uses

Spice Oleoresin is widely used for food preparation as a spice. It has antiseptic, germicidal, The fluid extract and tincture Guaiacwood are widely used in pharmacology as a diagnostic reagent in some blood tests. This oil finds usage in the treatment of gout, arthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. It can also be used as a fixative and fragrance in soaps and cosmetics. The wood has many medicinal properties as mentioned in many Pharmacopoeias that owes to the presence of resin. Both resin and the wood have stimulating and diaphoretic effects which are imparted to Guaiac wood Oil by extraction process called steam distillation. Guaiac wood is efficient in treating chronic rheumatism, gouty infection, scrofula, skin diseases, dysmenorrhea, and some uterine infections. The resin is used for treating toothache and bringing relief in rheumatism by external application only. Essence of Guaiac wood Oil Bulnesol and Guaiol are major constituents in Guaiac wood Oil. It is used in nebulizer, burner, baths and inhalations to enjoy the strong earthy aroma. Guaiac wood oil tightens loose, and saggy skin by contracting blood vessels and skin giving glowing and younger appearance. It removes dullness from skin. Its diuretic properties facilitate the movement of excess fluid. Its anti-oxidant properties fight free radicals to prevent skin aging. The ability of guaiac wood oil to prevent skin damage makes wide range of applications in cosmetic preparations.
